Under the direction of Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Frank Kirchner, the DFKI Robotics Innovation Center (RIC) in Bremen with more than 100 scientists and engineers is dedicated to the development of cognitive and adaptive robot systems for a wide range of applications, such as deep-sea, offshore and space exploration as well as adaptive automation for industrial production and logistics. Given the comprehensive multidisciplinarity of the field, which requires competencies in system design, control and programming as well as operation, evaluation, optimization and teaching, DFKI focuses on a rapid transfer of research results into practical applications.<\/p>

In the field of space exploration and the exploration of extraterrestrial surfaces, the Robotics Innovation Center can demonstrate many years of experience through numerous participations in ongoing and successfully completed projects, which took place on behalf of the ESA, the DLR, the BMWK and the EU, among others.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

As an application-oriented research institution, the DFKI Robotics Innovation Center is in charge of the implementation of the pilot “Planetary Exploration” as well as the Smart Service “Digital Twin for Kinematic-Complex Robot Systems”. To this end, the DFKI is also in charge of expanding the digital control center of the aforementioned robot systems in the context of planetary exploration.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

For monitoring, mission planning and interaction with kinematically complex robots that are used in remote applications, for example, a digital representation of the system that is as close to reality as possible is required in order to know the current status and be able to take this into account. In addition to development and operation, such a virtual system representation is also necessary for the training of operators in order to optimise training. In the scientific context of space exploration in particular, it is also necessary to keep data sets standardised and consistent so that they can be shared with scientists from a wide range of disciplines and specific digital analysis software can be used. As part of COOPERANTS, the concrete implementation of a digital twin in the GAIA-X Cloud is planned using the example of the SherpaTT walking rover as well as the connection of the DFKI control centre to the GAIA-X platform.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
